It's nice to see Mark Brown of the Chicago Sun-Times rethinking his "Bush is wrong" opinion, but I found his article quite annoying. It's a weakly written concession and full of insidious little comments.
"... the Iraqi … getting a taste of free choice (setting aside the argument that they only did so under orders from their religious leaders)" --The happy, proud faces of Iraqi voters that I saw yesterday didn’t look like they'd just finished following the orders of their religious leaders. Their comments all seemed to be centered on how much they valued freedom.
"Going to war still sent so many terrible messages to the world." -- Oh please, what's he whining about?! Worried what the French think of us?
"Most of the obstacles to success in Iraq are all still there, the ones that have always led me to believe that we would eventually be forced to leave the country with our tail tucked between our legs." -- Obstacles are what Americans eat for breakfast, what a weenie comment this is. He has no faith in the American military and American will because I speculate he's never truly understood it!
"voting did nothing to end the violence. The forces trying to regain the power they have lost -- and the outside elements supporting them -- will be no less determined to disrupt our efforts and to drive us out." -- This is the point of the war, the bad guys in Iraq and from outside of Iraq oppose us, want to kill us and fly planes into our buildings and so we're fighting them. The vote isn't going to end their violent tendencies, but the successful outcome of the war will.
"Instead of making the elections a further expression of "Yankee Go Home,..." -- From most of the accounts I've read from troops in Iraq the locals aren't giving us the "Yankee Go Home" song and dance. He ponders a "further expression" of dislike on their part without establishing the original expression of dislike. Chiefly, the ones who dislike us are the bad guys with the car bombs.
"Maybe I'd have to vote Republican in 2008." -- Yeah, I believe you Mark. By the way, the check for the Brooklyn Bridge is in the mail. Who does he think he's fooling, this goof can't wait to pull the lever for Hillary in 2008.
Only a liberal could write a concession article that is this maddening! And yet, at least he has now been forced to consider the question, "What if Bush was right all along?", which is sweet for those of us who knew all along that he was.
