We were all there at 5:30 a.m., slightly bleary eyed, to greet our oldest at the airport. All the way home, she told us stories of the trip. Then, last night, she plugged the camera into the TV and we saw the pictures and videos she'd taken. (Once again, I have to say, ain't technology great?!?)
She had a wonderful time and I'm so glad she went.
One last thing: Last week we were chatting with a dad at one of our kids' baseball games, and when we told him our daughter was in Korea, he said, "Wow! Pretty good, Mom and Dad!" He thought we had paid for the trip for her. But, nope, we didn't. She'd saved her pennies, working as an instructor at Tae Kwon Do for the last three years, and paid for her trip herself. Pretty good for a teenage kid, don't you think?

Why, thank you, Dad29! And as far as the college tuition... well, she won't be 100% self-paid, but she's doing pretty well. She earned a half-tuition scholarship, has been working as a Tae Kwon Do instructor for three years and saving her money in a 529 EdVest account (tax free earnings when the money is used for college), and will continue to work through college. We're going to help her, but our contribution has to be limited; after all, we have four kids, and a retirement to plan for.
However, our joint goal is to avoid debt. She'd like to be able to start her life without a huge burden of massive college loan debt hanging over her head.
I have many things I'd love to say about college tuition, the way the whole system is predicated on massive amounts of student and/or parent debt, the FAFSA process, the way financial aid tends to punish parents who saved and reward those who didn't, and more.... but that has to wait for another day. We were on vacation last week and I'm still trying to re-enter ordinary life!
